Bettelheim, Bruno
(28 ago. 1903, Viena, Austria–13 mar. 1990, Silver Spring, Md., EE.UU.).

Psicólogo estadounidense de origen austríaco. Formado en Viena, fue arrestado por los nazis y enviado a los campos de concentración (1938–39). Emigró a EE.UU., donde a partir de 1944 dirigió la escuela ortogénica de la Universidad de Chicago, una escuela laboratorio para niños con trastornos. Se hizo conocida especialmente por el trabajo que realizó con niños autistas. Aplicó principios psicoanalíticos a problemas sociales, especialmente en la crianza de niños. Sus obras incluyen un ensayo influyente sobre la adaptación al estrés extremo (1943), El amor no es suficiente (1950), así como The informed Heart [El corazón informado] (1960), La fortaleza vacía (1967), Children of the Drean [Niños del ensueño] (1967) y Psicoanálisis de los cuentos de hadas (1976). Deprimido a raíz de la muerte de su esposa y luego de haber sufrido una apoplejía, se suicidó. Posteriormente su reputación se vio empañada ante revelaciones de haber inventado sus credenciales académicas y de abusar y efectuar diagnósticos errados a niños que asistían a su escuela.
